John McDonald
John McDonald is president and owner of Stones Throw, a strategic communications company providing advice and services to organizations engaged in issues impacting children, families and communities. He is also the managing partner of Stones Throw Productions, Ltd., an independent producer of high quality video products for entertainment, marketing and informational purposes.
With more than 20 years of communications experience, he brings considerable expertise to the campaigns and projects of his clients. He is particularly skilled in working with the news media, the development of strategic campaigns, and the creation of effective communication products. He has also managed the production of dozens of video projects, ranging from commercials and public services announcements to documentary style products for nonprofit and political clients.
His work at Stones Throw has focused on issues related to education, public health, the conditions of children and the the intersection of philanthropy and public policy. In the process he has helped his clients to effectively communicate with key audiences and to make members of the news media more aware of the research and actions of his clients on policy issues.
John has worked with many of Californias top nonprofits, leading foundations and academic institutions. A partial list of clients includes The California Wellness Foundation, the California Family Health Council, the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning, Children Now, the Childrens Defense Fund, The Childrens Partnership, the Cotsen Foundation, the Health Insurance Policy Program at UC Berkeley, the UCLA Center for Health Policy, the Institute for Public Health Policy at UC San Francisco, the Los Angeles Educational Partnership, LEARN, the University of Southern California Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy, the Public Education Network and others.
Prior to forming Stone's Throw, John was communications director for the Los Angeles Educational Partnership (LAEP), a non-profit organization working for the reform of public education in Los Angeles. Through his efforts the organization received extensive national and local recognition, including coverage in Fortune, NewsWeek, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and other major newspaper, television and radio news outlets. He also led the development of Principal for a Day, a special event that has become a school involvement model for communities across the nation.
John was also press secretary to Leo McCarthy, the former Lieutenant Governor of California and worked on the press and advance efforts of Mr. McCarthy's 1988 campaign for the U.S. Senate. He also worked in similar positions in other Democratic political campaigns including Tom Bradley's 1986 campaign for Governor of California. Mr. McDonald also worked in a variety of positions for the CBS local news affiliate (KCBS -TV) in Los Angeles and as a freelance writer. His writing has been published in the Los Angeles Times and other major publications. |
